NaNoWriMo: Mid-month checkin

So, a little while ago I admitted I was entering NaNoWriMo, not to prove I could write 50,000 words in one month (hi, I do that already), but to get those creative juices flowing.

So, it’s now mid-month, and I will confess: I haven’t written much more than 5,000 words total. That’s of course, 5,000 words more than I would have written creatively at all this month, but I’d still like more.

However, I’m hitting a problem. No, no, not writer’s block – I know how to get past that. It’s that this story’s style, and decided lack of any serious direction, has me already itching to get down to the real work – to write something more serious. Yes, to plot and plan and begin my very own novel for once, and stick to it this time. I just don’t know what… I have a lot of ideas floating around in my head, even ideas left over from previous escapades in writing, and I’m not sure what calls to me.

Have any of you written a fiction book before? How do you go about planning this out?
