The Art of Writing About Video Games

Video game journalism – in which I will, for the sake of this discussion, also include guides, reviews, and commentaries – is viewed as a more “lowly” form of writing when it comes to the art of putting black letters on white backgrounds. This is mainly due to a cultural stigma against video games: although they are increasing in popularity, the video gaming population is much smaller, and much less accepted, than in other countries, particularly in Asia (where many of our video games still come from). In fact, some of our biggest cultural icons propagate ideas such as “video games can never be art” and “video games cause violence” and “video games are for lazy people.”
